From a first call to a decision
How a claim moves, one step at a time
Every claim is different. This is the order things usually happen in.
- 01
Step 1: You call and tell me about the letter
Say what happened, what you've filed, and what's arrived. If you have a letter, read me the date on it.
- 02
Step 2: I read before I promise anything
I look at what you send and tell you plainly whether I think I can help, and what stands in the way.
- 03
Step 3: You get the fee in writing
It's in writing and says what the fee is under the rules for your kind of claim, and what costs are separate.
- 04
Step 4: I gather the records
I request your medical files, ask your doctors for short statements, and track down missing pieces.
- 05
Step 5: I file, or I appeal
I send the application or the appeal, keep every date, and call you when something arrives.
- 06
Step 6: A decision, then what comes next
I explain the answer. If it's yes, I check the amounts. If it's no, we talk about the next step the same day.
Waiting, in the meantime
Will you call me, or only email?
I call. Most people would rather hear a voice than read another letter, and I'd rather hear how you're doing.
What should I do with new letters?
Keep every one, and keep the envelope if you can. The postmark can matter. Send me a photo or bring them in.
Do I have to come to the office?
Not usually. We can talk by phone, and if getting out is hard, I'll come to you or meet by video.
Begin with a conversation
A first call is a conversation, not an intake. Tell me what's going on and what you've received so far.
